The Goals of the Fredericton Botanic Garden:

• to provide a recreational oppotunity to the public by means of walks, interpretive trails and beautiful displays of flowers and foliage
• use tried and untried plant species and varieties so the public have a hands-on demonstration of plant hardiness
• educate people of all ages to appreciate plants and to learn how plants coexist in natural settings
• involve the community in the development of a new and important tourist attraction for the Fredericton area

Key Events

1989 - Fredericton Botanic Garden Association established and incorporated.
1990 - Agreement with the City of Fredericton to provide the 21 ha. site adjacent to Odell Park for the development of the Fredericton Botanic Garden.
1990 - First Spring Plant Sale held in Odell Park parking lot. It raised $1,900.
1991 - Soil survey of the site completed.
1992 - Local Improvement Association incorporated to merge the interests of the Fredericton Botanic Garden Association and the City of Fredericton, and to oversee the management of the Garden.
1992 - Building moved to the Botanic Garden.
1992 - Entrance Garden opened.
1994 - Resource Centre moved to its present site, the basement added and other improvements carried out.
1995 - Improvements to the Entrance Garden with raised shrub beds and French drain.
1995 - Hoop greenhouse erected.
1996 - Twelve theme garden modules selected.
1996 - Main access road through the Garden completed.
1997 - Conceptual Master Plan for the Garden, including the theme garden modules, prepared by Daniel K. Glen Ltd, Landscape Architects and Park Planners.
1998 - Topographical survey completed.
1998 - Rose Garden module designed by Daniel K. Glen, Ltd. and initial site preparation carried out.
1999 - First summer Treasured Garden Tour.
2000 - Saint John River Valley Ecosystem Kiosk opened.
2000 - Participation in Capital Learning Quest.
2000 - Rhododendrons and azaleas donated by the Atlantic Chapter, North American Rhododendron Society.
2000 - Ponds and drainage swale developed in the North Meadow.
2000 - Strategic Plan developed to identify Vision, Mission and Strategic Goals.
2001 - Continued development of the Rose Garden module
2001 - Major fund raising campaign research initiated
2003 - Fundraising Campaign initiated
2003 - Family Plan to raise $100,000 among members of the FBGA
2004 - Main road through garden restructured for wheelchair access
2005 - Development of pool site completed
2006 - Fredericton Community Foundation awards the FBGA a $50,000 grant to construct a new Entrance Garden
2006 - Family fundraising successfully completed, $117,000 raised
2006 - Construction of new Entrance Garden commences
